Creature Commandos Showrunner Reveals Favorite Character, Says They’re The “Heart Of The Show”

Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey dished on the characters of the new DC Universe show and how they drive its narrative. The series follows the Creature Commandos, a group of nonhumans who serve as replacements for Task Force X, better known as the Suicide Squad. Creature Commandos stars Viola Davis, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, Steve Agee, Indira Varma, David Harbour, Anya Chalotra, Benjamin Byron Davis, Maria Bakalova, and Alan Tudyk. The first season started airing on December 5, 2024 on Max, and it will conclude on January 9, 2025.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Lorey unpacked his feelings towards the characters of his show. The writer explained: “What’s nice about it is, when you take away part of the trappings of the characters, there’s a real clean drive and direction for each of the characters.”

Getting into specifics, Lorey explained that “Nina is really the heart of the show” and “the sweetest of the characters.” The showrunner also elaborated on why Nina is a resonant character: “She is, I think, the point of view character for the audience, and then we get into her backstory, and you’ll see she’s really gone through a lot.”

Creature Commandos features a truly explosive soundtrack, declaring immediately that James Gunn will push the DCU into new exciting directions.

In spite of this, Nina is not Lorey’s favorite. That honor goes to G. I. Robot, who he calls “wonderful.” Lorey stated: “He’s just so wonderful and what I love about G.I. Robot is, he’s so clean and clear and specific. He just wants to kill Nazis and he likes his buddies.” As for the rest of the characters, he “[loves] the way that all the characters have nicely, clearly defined personalities and goals, and they fit together very well.

Creature Commandos featuring an ensemble cast means that its characters have to be memorable. Like the Suicide Squad, the Commandos are a group forced to work together regardless of prior relationships or lack thereof. It’s like a buddy cop scenario, except with a bigger cast of characters. Lorey’s words imply that a lot of thought was put into the characters of Creature Commandos, or more importantly, their individual motives.

It’s a good sign that each character has been given a role and driving force in Creature Commandos. What’s more, Lorey designating Nina as both the heart of the show and the audience surrogate invites audiences into the series’ wacky world. With a colorful cast like that of Creature Commandos, having a humanizing element is important to help fans click with the series, so hopefully, Lorey’s writing will bring that to the DCU.
